Can you afford 42 Square feet in Silicon Valley?
Bloomberg recently published an article that looked at how much it would cost to buy enough space for a king-sized mattress, namely 42 square feet. It came as no surprise to me the top seven most expensive neighborhoods in the U.S. to buy space needed for such a sized mattress, are all in Palo Alto. A friend passed this article on to me and I liked how imagining such a tangible object lent a certain perspective! You can read the whole article here.
The article also went on to point out that 15 of the 20 most expensive neighborhoods in the U.S. are now in California. In 2008 the top 20 neighborhoods were all in New York, this year only 5 of the top 20 remain in New York, which indicates a huge shift in pricing.
So while I was thinking of mattresses and square feet and pricing, I decided to take a look at the areas I cover and see how much a king size mattress space would cost in those cities; the time frame I used is January – August 2018, so numbers for Palo Alto may be slightly different.
For single family houses, the top three cities for square feet cost is: Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Mountain View. For condos and town homes, the top three cities for square feet cost is: Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Cupertino.
Thinking of the cost per square feet of our homes, and how much it costs to house a mattress, a car, or a dining table, a whole new conversation emerges on the value of the things we keep.
