Like its cousin city, Saratoga, Woodside incorporated in the fifties to resist urbanization. By any measure, it has succeeded. While Sunnyvale and Mountain View host tech giants during the day, Woodside’s where many of their shining lights spend the night. The town is purposefully horse-rich and business-poor. Got an extra million? That’ll buy you part of an empty lot, if you can find one. It’s one of those towns where, to get the land, you buy the house and bulldoze it. And I don’t mean a teardown.
It’s definitely stretching it to say Woodside has a downtown but I’ll stretch, and it does, albeit a small one. Here you can find commercial offices tastefully disguised as old town buildings with a City Hall so set back from the main street that it’s easily overlooked! Situated on a crossroad you can visit wonderful Robert’s Market and Bucks Restaurant (the home of many a venture capital deal) to name a few charming must visit places. If you’re driving around feeling a bit lost, look for the large wood fish; yes, that’s what I said! If you pass the large carved fish you’ve gone too far and missed the shopping center! Turn around and spend some time visiting this small but interesting shopping strip.
