Los Altos City

LOS ALTOS CITY HOUSING TRENDS

Having lived in Los Altos for many years, and having worked in it for even longer, I have found many things to love about Los Altos: the quaint downtown, the many parks, the spacious feel to the neighborhoods, and the lovely view of nearby hills.

The minimum lot size in Los Altos is around ten thousand square feet, meaning the city has a spacious tree lined feel to it; properties aren’t crowded and there is charm in the diversity of buildings. Los Altos has its commercial side restricted to certain areas: to mention just a few, visit Loyola Corners on the corner of Foothill Expressway and Loyola (home to a great breakfast restaurant), Rancho Shopping Center, on the corner of Magdalena and Springer, with its variety of small shops, Village Court shopping center located on the corner of El Camino Real and San Antonio Road, and the newly renovated and quaint downtown (take Main Street exit off Foothill Expressway), evocative of small-town America.

Here you’ll find boutiques offering just about everything. There are no large malls in Los Altos and tall buildings of any kind are discouraged by residents and planning department alike.

Los Altos has many lovely parks, both large and small; a couple of the more tucked away parks are Shoup Park and Redwood Grove, both located on University Avenue, within walking distance of downtown. And let’s not forget that it also has the Los Altos Stage Company, formerly known as the Bus Barn Theatre, a wonderful destination!

For those who have visited the Winchester Mystery House in Campbell (near Winchester and 280, opposite Santana Row), you might be interested to know that Sarah Winchester originally lived in a house off University Avenue in Los Altos. This is a charming Victorian house which has quite a history and is reputed to be haunted!

Most of Los Altos is covered by the excellent Los Altos School District; however some of the most southern parts of Los Altos, close to Cupertino, have Cupertino schools. The high school is run jointly by Los Altos and the neighboring town of Mountain View.

APARTMENTS

I don’t have any apartment buildings to recommend in Los Altos since all my rentals here have been single family homes. Having said that, there are apartments near downtown and close to El Camino Real.
